Eltz Castle it’s time! In January, on a weekend when Munich was covered with snow, we couldn’t stand our curiosity any longer and went to see Eltz Castle’!
Eltz Castle is one of the most popular castles in Germany in recent years, which is a true ‘Castle-Castle Paradise’.. Eltz Castle is also known as the castle of myths and art and has been in the hands of the same family for 30 generations! Due to its location, it has not been damaged in wars and has excellent walking paths around it.. That being the case, we said let’s spend a weekend at Eltz Castle, and choose one of the trekking paths on the way to the castle and return to the nature walks that we have been apart for a while.. Glad we went, it became one of our two favorite castles in Germany.. The other, of course, is Neuschwanstein Castle..

Which is the Closest Airport to Eltz Castle?
The closest airport to Eltz Castle is Frankfurt airport. If you landed at Frankfurt Airport and you are going to rent a car directly and come to the castle, the road takes about 1.5 hours.. If you have time before visiting the castle, you can visit Cochem, which is half an hour away from Eltz Castle.

Even if you are planning the Eltz Castle as a weekend trip; Combine the City of Cochem, Cochem Castle, the famous suspension bridge of this region Geierlay (Geierlay Suspension Bridge) and Frankfurt with an afternoon. Thus, you will have a weekend plan like a 2-day ball of light! ☺
How to Get to Eltz Castle? Eltz Castle Transportation
We recommend renting a car to visit this area because the roads are really beautiful and it is possible to drive to the bottom of Eltz Castle. However, if you do not have the opportunity to rent a car or if you are coming by train from another city in Europe (like us), it is possible to reach a certain place by public transport.. There is no direct train to Fortress Eltz, but you can go to Moselkern train station from Frankfurt or anywhere and then take a bus from May to late October. But beware! The bus is really only available from May to the end of October, the rest of the time it’s grassroots.. ☺ You can check the bus times here.
Eltz Castle Trekking Routes
Well, if we’re coming outside of these months and if we haven’t rented a car, if you’re wondering how we can get there, let’s tell you right away; using extremely beautiful trekking routes! Namely; There are trekking trails that start from Moselkern or just at the bottom of Treis Karden train station, varying between 5 and 10 km and ending at Eltz Castle.. We chose the 6km track starting from Treis Karden and we were at Eltz Castle in about 1.5 hours.. First you climb a little, then you go on a straight road and finally you reach the castle by walking 2 km through the forest.. Even if you get a little tired, believe me, you will forget everything with happiness when you reach the castle!
If you decide to trek alone, we recommend you to start walking early, we had to ask a couple around the castle to drop us off to the hotel, as it was dark on the way back. it wouldn’t have been nice if no one had taken us back to the city!

You don’t need to spend much time in the Treis Karden (or Moselkern) area outside of the accommodation, because there is not much to see, there are also people on the street none . ☺ The real beauty is the vineyard roads and villages you pass to reach the castle, and of course the castle itself.

Eltz Castle Open from 1 April to 30 October
Eltz Castle It is possible to visit the inside of by paying 7 Euros, but it is closed during the winter months.. It was closed when we went (January) and we walked around its garden.. We should say that; The impressive thing about Eltz Castle is that it stands alone in the middle of nowhere in a valley and the feeling of admiration it leaves you while watching the castle from above.. So we were not upset that we could not enter the castle! ☺
When to Go to Eltz Castle?
For us, Eltz Castle is magnificent in all seasons. That’s right there, of course, but we don’t get away with saying that.. The best time for Eltz Castle is definitely autumn if you want to go inside the castle as well.. Especially when the leaves start to turn yellow and red. Finally, there is a cafe inside Eltz Castle, but it is also closed during winter times, so If you are coming in winter time, do not forget to take your water and snacks with you!
